Creating an End of Year Video Presentation

end of year video

With Halloween behind us, families are beginning the tradition of taking family photos and creating their Christmas cards to highlight their story for the year. However, with the advancements in digital technology, this practice has significantly evolved in the past decade and families are relying more on social media to share their highlights.

Family videos have become increasingly popular as a way to capture and share moments, creating a unique and personalized experience for both the creators and viewers.

So this week, I'm taking time to highlight tips and inspiration for how you can easily bring your family highlights to life.

What is an End of Year Video Presentation?

A year-end video serves as a visual diary, in which each frame captures a special part of your family's story. This not only helps to keep these memories alive but also allows them to be shared with loved ones near and far. With the right mix of pictures, video clips, text overlays and music, a year-end video becomes more than just a compilation of moments; it transforms into a heartfelt narrative of your family's journey through the year.

Memories are a powerful force. They can transport us back to times of joy, love and laughter, allowing us to relive these special moments over and over again. A well-crafted video not only preserves these memories but also brings them to life in a way that photographs alone cannot. It captures the emotions, the sounds and the atmosphere, making it a perfect time capsule for your family's special moments.

Best Practices for Organizing Your Memories

It may seem like a daunting task, sifting through a year's worth of moments to highlight just a few. Yet, with a few best practices for photo organization, you can create a collection of images that not only reflect the year's best moments but also convey the essence of your family's journey.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Heart (or star) your favorite photos right after you take them: In the moment, it's easy to identify the photos/videos that capture the magic. By marking them as favorites, you'll save yourself considerable time when it comes to selecting the best ones for your video.

  • Tag photos with relevant descriptions: A picture is worth a thousand words, but a few descriptive tags can make all the difference, especially when you're looking back months later. Tagging photos/videos with details such as the event, location or people present can help you quickly find and organize the photos that tell your family's story best. I label all my photos with the names of family members, allowing me to easily search for the most loved ones ❤️ and find them based on the people tagged.

  • Make organizing photos a routine: Instead of waiting until the end of the year, make organizing a regular habit. Allocate dedicated time each week or month to review and organize your recent photos. This approach makes the task more manageable and ensures you don't miss any important moments amidst the busyness of the year. I conduct two major clean-ups each year while preparing birthday videos for my children. Additionally, I perform smaller clean-ups every month, especially when I have accumulated a significant number of game videos, and so on.

  • Adopt a consistent naming system: Implementing a systematic approach to naming your photos and videos can greatly enhance your ability to locate and curate them. Use a consistent naming convention that includes the date, event or people present. This way, the file name itself can provide key information about the content, simplifying your search and organization process in the future. All of my photos are organized by Date-Month-Day_Name_# (20231022_Pumpkin_Patch_1, 20231022_Pumpkin_Patch_2, etc.)

In addition to following these best practices, when choosing images and clips for your video, consider what will truly make it stand out and hold significance when you reflect on it in the future, be it in 5, 10, or 20 years. Look for moments of genuine emotion – a tearful hug, a hearty laugh, a surprised gasp. These raw, unfiltered moments are what lend authenticity and heartfelt sentiment to your video. Additionally, ensure you include a diverse range of events, both grand and modest, to provide a well-rounded portrayal of your year.
